Rhetorical Strategy Intended Effect on Audience
Pathos Thunberg uses this approach to give off a harsh tone to the target audience. The purpose of this is to persuade the audience that what has happened so far is not acceptable and that change is coming, while intimidating world leaders for their wrongdoings, who are the target of this speech. For example she says "...and you are still not mature enough to tell it like it is," and "we will never forgive you."
Connotation In the speech Thunberg uses connotation to carefully choose words/phrases to support the goal of her speech. Using such words, with negative connotation, as "betrayal," "failing," and "not mature," she is able to develop a harsh tone for her speech which aids in conveying her message effectively to the audience.
Syntax
(Short, direct sentences)
Through the use of short and direct sentences, Thunberg is able to have her speech move at a much faster rate. With it moving at that fast rate, she is able to create the feeling of tension and urgency in what she is saying.
Logos During the speech, Thunberg uses various statistics to help support the claims she is making. For instance she states, "The popular idea of cutting our emissions in half in 10 years only gives us a 50 percent chance of staying below 1.5 degrees and the risk of setting off irreversible chain reactions beyond human control." Including statistics such as that increases her credibility while she is speaking, which allows for the audience to better believe what she is saying.
Rhetorical Question
("How dare you pretend that this can be solved with just business as usual and some technical solutions?")
Thunberg asks this question not for the intent of receiving an actual answer, but for the effect of it. Through her asking this, it adds onto the harsh matter-of-fact tone that she is trying to create.
