5.04 Understanding 20th Century Poetry
Decade | Literary Title | Event | Explanation |
---|---|---|---|
1900s | Les Fleurs du mal (Charles Baudelaire) |
Rise of Symbolism | When the volume of poems was originally released in 1857, it was different than the traditional way poetry was done. It used more senses/arts to bring a new life to poetry. In the 1900s, this was further developed into what we now know as Symbolism, which had a big rise during this time in many literature works. |
1910s | The Job (Sinclair Lewis) |
Women's Rights Movement | In the early 1900s, the Women's Rights Movement was in full swing. This book tells the story of a woman trying to do what every other woman was doing then, trying to establish herself among everyone else. |
1920s | The Great Gatsby (F. Scott Fitzgerald) |
The Roaring '20s | The 1920s was a crazy time. Culture was changing, and people were doing crazy things. Written by my distant cousin, F. Scott Fitzgerald does an amazing job of telling a story, while sending you back in time to the 1920s to see what it was all about. |
1930s | A Further Range (Robert Frost) |
The Great Depression | Throughout the 1930s, America was facing the Great Depression. It was a very hard and emotional time for a lot of people. Because of that, emotional works such as this one were written to fit the time. |
