2.03 The Anti-Federalists

"It is essential to such a government that it be derived from the great body of the society, not from an inconsiderable proportion, or a favored class of it; otherwise a handful of tyrannical nobles, exercising their oppressions by a delegation of their powers, might aspire to the rank of Republicans, and claim for their government the honorable title of republic." The Federalist Papers (No. 39) |
This quote supports the Federalist perspective because it described the kind of government they wanted. The Federalists wanted to break away from Britain; and have a strong central government, army, and bank. They were the ones who wanted the three different branches, to help distribute the power. |
"And are by this clause invested with the power of making all laws, proper, and necessary, for carrying all these into execution; and they may so exercise this power as entirely to annihilate all the state governments and reduce this country to one single government." Brutus #1 |
This quote supports the Anti-Federalist perspective because it also describes the kind of government that they wanted. Unlike the Federalists, they did not want to break away from Britain. They wanted to keep the government that had already been created. But with that kind of government, the rich could bribe those in power to do what they wanted (which would basically screw over those who were not rich). |
I feel that the better argument here is of the Federalist perspective. The U.S. was already having issues with the government that the British had established here, and keeping it in place would not make it any better. The type of government that the Federalists supported had more benefit to the country at the time, while the Anti-Federalists wanted to keep the monarchy. If the monarchy were to have been kept in place here, the government would be corrupt. "...to annihilate all the state governments and reduce this country to one single government" states this exact point on what they wanted to do. They did not want to distribute the power out, they wanted to contain it all in one place.
