3.05 Media and Politics

This political cartoon represents censorship, which is a thing that prominently exists in today’s world, not just the United States. Censorship is where something is suppressed from being seen by people, intentionally. This cartoon illustrates how when censorship occurs, you are not given your right to freedom speech. In the cartoon, it actually costs money to get that. The right to freedom of speech is a right guaranteed to the American people by the 1st amendment of the United States constitution.
This cartoon is not exactly biased towards one side of the political spectrum, it just explains the problem of censorship throughout the world. Censorship occurs through various different ways which include social media, television, and even the internet. The artist is able to get his message across because he is able to communicate the message to the audience in a way that makes sense, through the use of symbolism. It makes the audience think about censorship, and how it may actually be happening right behind their backs without noticing.
The media has changed significantly over time. We have gone from newspapers, to radio, to television, and now today also including our phones. The main problem in today’s world is that a lot of networks choose sides and stick to that side (cutting off the other side), instead of just reporting the facts as they actually happen. This affects the way things are communicated, as not everyone watches the same network. If people are given different sides of the same information, it causes divide. We see it in today’s world. Think about how much better the world would be today if all the networks would just report the facts, and not stick to choosing sides.
