Schutzstaffel meant “protection squadron” in German
They were the elite Nazi military unit that ran the camps
Formed in 1925, renamed to Schutzstaffel in 1926
Led by Heinrich Himmler
Group started as Adolf Hitler’s bodyguards
The SS assigned many prisoners as workers and
pocketed their salaries
After 1932, the SS wore black uniforms, changing from
their grey uniforms beforehand
The SS had a special interest in attracting “Aryans”, who
were blonde-haired, blue-eyed Germans
Became a branch of the German
government under Hitler’s power as the
organization grew
The SS took over the Geheime
Staatspolizei, also known as the Gestapo,
in 1934
Einsatzgruppen was formed by the SS to
neutralize threats in Germany
Two laws were passed in 1935
Those laws included one respecting the Reich
citizenship, and another for protection of German
blood and honor
Only people with German blood could be Reich
citizens
Only Aryans (German people) had full political rights
Jews had no political rights and “were below” others
Marriage or relationships between Jews and Germans
were not allowed
Jews could not employ female Germans under the age
of 45, and could not display the German flag
The “Regulation to the Reich Citizen Law” declared
that anyone not Aryan were considered Jews
There were full, half, and quarter Jews (meaning
how much Jewish heritage they have)
Quarter and half Jews were not treated as badly as
full ones were
Half Jews were people who weren’t Jewish, but had
a relative who was
They then made a law that made it legal for the
Nazis to kill all Jews, this was affected in all
countries that the Nazis were in control of
Geheime Staatspolizei is the full name
Gestapo was the official secret police of
Nazi Germany
The force was created by Hermann Goring
in 1933
Heinrich Himmler, leader of the SS, took
control of the Gestapo
The Gestapo had virtually limitless power,
their actions could not be appealed to any
authority
Got rid of political dissidents, social
undesirables, uncooperative clergy,
“dangerous” intellectuals, homosexuals,
and Jews
Also known as “the mobile killing unit”
Moved to the Soviet Union in 1941 to
attempt to exterminate Jews, Gypsies, and
Communists
The Einsatzgruppen were responsible for
killing 1.2 million Jews
Separated into principal divisions A, B, C,
and D
Given the mission of rounding up and
eliminating Jews, Gypsies, communists,
Polish government officials, and political
dissidents
In 1948, 24 members were convicted and 14
were executed
Established in July 1926
This is basically the Nazi version of Boy Scouts
Kurt Gruber was the original leader
Before 1929, the organization was focused more
on patriotic marches, instead of teaching the Nazi
ideology
In April 1929, Hitler-Jugend was declared the only
official Nazi youth group
In 1933, Hitler cancelled all other youth groups,
and stressed that those of the cancelled groups
join Hitler-Jugend
The only group that was not cancelled was the
Catholic youth group, due to a Concordat signed
between the Vatican and Hitler
Instead of kids being taught Math,
Science, and Literature the Nazis began
teaching them Nazi racial principles,
German history, and leadership training
Teachers could not express any negative
opinions, otherwise they would
“magically disappear”
They would spend 2 hours everyday on
physical training
All their education prepared them to
become an official member of the Nazi
party
